The Wilderness of Manitoba will be playing a residency at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto on December 2, 9, 16 and 23 with friends and special guests. The lineup for this run of dates will be the same as the one that toured with Elliott Brood earlier in the year, featuring Will Whitwham, Raven Shields, Tavo Diez De Bonilla, and Mike Brushey. Joining them for guest sets will be Eamon McGrath, Jose Contreras (By Divine Right), Brian Borcherdt (Dusted), with Raven Shields and Whitwham’s solo project, Lake Forest, also performing their own sets.
The band will be using these shows to workshop new songs for its fifth album set to be recorded in January at Union Sound with Leon Taheny (Dilly Dally/Owen Pallett) and at Whitwham’s own Delaware House studio where earlier Wilderness Of Manitoba albums Hymns Of Love & Spirits and When You Left The Fire were recorded.
Whitwham has proven himself to be a prolific songwriter, evidenced by the four LPs and three EPs that the Wilderness of Manitoba have released since its inception in 2009 as well as recordings made with Lake Forest and other side projects.
While having a recognizable sound, the Wilderness of Manitoba has never made the same album twice. Their music has evolved from its early chamber folk beginnings, complete with four part vocal harmonies, to a more layered indie rock sound with the emphasis on dynamic male and female vocals. Whitwham says, “We’ve worked really hard over the past six years to earn the freedom to do what we want creatively. While our last album was ‘Between Colours,’ the next album aims to commit to one. We’ve always been a band that has thrived on change and originality. The residency at the Dakota will give us a chance to paint in public so to speak.”
The best way to find out what direction their new album will take is to jam into the rustic Dakota Tavern in Toronto during their residency December 2, 9, 16, and 23, to check out the new songs in person. For a sneak peek, listen to the stripped down version of upcoming album track “Nothing’s Ever Said”. More details on the forthcoming LP will be revealed shortly.

The Wilderness of Manitoba officially kicks off the summer on Tuesday at Le Petit Impérial in Quebec as part of Le Festival d’été de Québec. The band shares the stage with Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer and the Guy Belanger Trio. The next night, also as part of Le Festival d’été de Québec, they are in the Parc de la Francophonie (Loto-Québec stage) with the Franklin Electric and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Then, the band flies to the other side of the country to play two days at the Vancouver Folk Festival. They perform two workshops on Saturday and a concert and a workshop on Sunday. This will be their first time back to Vancouver since the show with Elliott Brood at the Commodore Ballroom. So, if you are in either Quebec or Vancouver this coming week, check out the Wilderness of Manitoba and say hello after the show!
We dropped by for a quick session with Band On A Couch before our headlining performance at the In The Soil Arts Festival in St. Catherines. We’ve had a little time off since the cross Canada tour with our friends Elliott Brood, but we’re happy to announce that we will be headlining the In The Soil Festival in St. Catharines on Friday, April 24th. It’s an outdoor stage so let’s hope that the sun shines and it’s a warm evening!
It’s been great hooking up with Elliott Brood again. Thanks to everyone who came out to Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria, Nelson and Golden. Tonight’s show is almost sold out. So, if you haven’t bought tickets yet, do it now!
We’re in Red Deer tonight. So happy to be back! It’s been a whole year. Looking forward to seeing you all!
We are excited to be returning to Winnipeg to play our home away from home, the Park Theatre, on Sunday. We did two shows there last year, one on our own and one as part of JUNOfest. We also had a great time performing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival back in July. So, we definitely have a connection with the city! Come check out our new line-up and a new song called Easier.
The Wilderness of Manitoba would like to thank all of their fans who came out to the shows in London, Hamilton and Toronto last week. They were truly great nights of music. We would also like to thank Elliott Brood for inviting us to tour with them. In February, we’ll be heading out west for headlining shows in Winnipeg and Red Deer before rejoining Elliott Brood. See you soon!
